  9. The software tools in the Chipmunk system perform a wide
  10. variety of tasks: electronic circuit simulation and schematic capture,
  11. graphics editing, and curve plotting, to name a few. The core tools
  12. began their life as the applications software for three clusters of
  13. Hewlett-Packard  9836C computers (and other compatible models) that
  14. were donated to the California Institute of Technology in the early-
  15. and mid- 1980's.  One cluster, of about 25 workstations, served as 
  16. computing tools for undergraduate and graduate Computer Science courses.
  17. A second cluster, of about 10 workstations, served as data acquisition
  18. and analysis tools for laboratory courses in integrated circuits: each 
  19. workstation was attached to donated HPIB test instruments.
  20. A third cluster served the laboratory of Carver Mead. 
  21.     
  22. Throughout the decade of the 80's, Caltech undergraduate
  23. and graduate students wrote a variety of software tools to run on
  24. these three clusters of machines: software to teach classes, do
  25. research, and prepare documents. When the 80's ended, and Unix
  26. workstations began to dominate research computing, the best tools were
  27. ported to run under HPUX running on HP 68030-based workstations
  28. running the X window system, and later to a  wide  assortment of hardware and
  29. software environments.

  31. In 1996, at Pisa University in Italy where I study computer engineering,
  32. during a Elaboration Systems course, I known LOG: an electronic circuit
  33. simulator. After my proof said me that log is part of ChipMunk, and that
  34. he and his group was warking on a MS-DOS porting. So I decided to port
  35. ChipMunk on our favourite computer: tha AMIGA... And here it is!

  37. Here is a brief description of each of the Chipmunk tools.

  40.    Log is a graphical environment for entering circuit schematics, and
  41.    for analog and digital circuit simulation. 
  42.  View 
  43.    View is a tool for manipulating and plotting data. 
  44.  Until 
  45.    Until is a graphics editor.
  46.  Wol 
  47.    Wol is a tool for creating integrated circuit layout.
  48.     
  49.  In addition to these major tools, many supplementary  tools are part of the
  50. Chipmunk system.
